Anse Major Nature Trail Reopens to Hikers

The Anse Major Trail, amongst the most renowned and picturesque nature trails of the Seychelles Islands was temporarily closed off to visitors by the Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority(SPGA) during the months of May and June to cater for renovation works along the trail. The much needed facelift to the trail has focused primarily on ensuring the added safety of hikers when making use of the path.

Located in the Bel Ombre district, the Anse Major Trail was once an important site for the production of cultivated vanilla, cinnamon oil, copra, citrus fruit and patchouli. This Trail has over the years gained much popularity with hikers, starting at Danzil Bel –Ombre. The stunning journey lasting about 45 minutes offers a low level of difficulty for anyone who wishes to immerse in nature and enjoy a relaxing stroll through the lush jungles of the National Park, finishing off at the breath-taking Anse Major Beach.  Trekking down the path, much is to be spotted such as endemic species like the “kafe marron” (wild vanilla) and the Seychelles Bulbul , and the iconic “Ros Legliz” where one must scramble under the giant boulders offering much needed shelter form the heat.

Initially, the revamping and renovating of the trail was due to last about one month. However, with unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather conditions, the various work spilled over to the month of June. The main additions to the trail are the cemented paths. Securing of loose stones, more precisely those found along the edges has been a key priority for the Authority. SPGA CEO Mr. Allen Cedras commented “The safety of all hikers and trekkers is very important. We noticed that these loose and unsecured stones posed great danger for anyone using the trail, especially during times of rainfall when water runs down the boulders and accumulates at the foot of the cliff, hence the urgency to close off the trail, allowing our team to undertake the necessary work”.

The steps taken by SPGA to revitalize and secure the trail forms part of the entity’s long-term plan to make all trails safe and durable. Earlier this year, new information boards were added to the trail providing trail goers a more relaxed yet informative experience.  As renovations on this trail has neared its end, SPGA now looks at the second phase of the work which will be the implementation of payable access to the path, similar to that currently being implemented at the Copolia Trail.
