Marine Park Officers Achieve MPA Professionals Certification
In a significant achievement for SPGA and marine conservation, another dedicated group of Park Officers from the Curieuse, Ste. Anne, Baie Ternay and Port Launay Marine Park have recently successfully completed the Western Indian Ocean Certification of Marine Protected Area (MPA) Professionals(WIO-COMPAS). Ms. Shazelle Julie, Mr. Stenio Jean and Mr. Rolland Quatre engaged in the rigorous program designed to equip MPA professionals with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively manage and protect marine ecosystems.
The week-long certification event which took place in Mauritius in July, involved extensive training in various aspects of marine management, including ecological monitoring, stakeholder engagement, and policy development. The officers participated in workshops and field exercises aimed at enhancing their competencies in marine park management.
“This certification is not just a personal achievement for the officers; but it also represents our collective commitment to safeguarding our marine protected areas,” said the SPGA Chief Executive Officer, Allen Cedras. “With 8 certified officers, we are now better equipped to address the challenges facing our marine protected areas and ensure their resilience for future generations.”
The newly certified officers will play a crucial role in implementing best practices in marine conservation, with their training having covered key topics such as habitat restoration and the importance of community involvement in conservation efforts. By integrating these practices, the officers aim to create a more sustainable approach to managing marine resources.
