Curieuse Island Designated as a National Park

Curieuse Island has officially been designated as a National Park under the Nature Reserves and Conservancy Act (2022), following a Cabinet of Ministers meeting held on January 22nd. This significant decision formalizes the island’s status as a protected area, acknowledging its rich biodiversity, unique wildlife, and vital cultural and historical heritage. The announcement was made by the Vice President; Mr. Ahmed Afif.

Historically a leprosy settlement, Curieuse Island is renowned for its endemic species, including the iconic Coco de Mer palm and the Giant Aldabra Tortoises that roam freely across its landscape. The island also features notable historical landmarks, such as the Doctor’s House and the remnants of the former leprosy settlement. With over 50,000 visitors annually, Curieuse is one of the Seychelles’ most visited attractions, and its new designation underscores Seychelles’ commitment to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

Vice President Afif emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “From both an environmental and international conservation perspective, it is vital for Seychelles to protect more areas. This designation will further safeguard the island’s flora and fauna, ensuring that future generations can witness these species in their natural environment.”

In response to the announcement, CEO Cedras remarked, “For many years, Curieuse Island has effectively operated as a National Park, despite lacking official status comparable to its surrounding waters. This new designation empowers us with stronger tools to ensure continued protection. I believe we are on the right track; our existing strategies are effective, and this legal recognition enhances our authority to enforce our mandates on the island.”

The designation of Curieuse Island as a National Park not only preserves its natural and cultural treasures but also reinforces Seychelles' broader goals of environmental sustainability and conservation, paving the way for future initiatives that protect our unique ecosystems.
