SPGA Engages Youth Offenders in Conservation
Representatives from the Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority (SPGA) conducted an engaging session on Friday, February 7th, at the Youth Offenders Facility in Amitie, Praslin. Led by Mrs. Vicky Athanase, the Inner Islands Manager, the event aimed to foster meaningful dialogue with the young offenders about the importance of environmental conservation.
Inspector Stephanie Lewis, the Officer in Charge of the facility, welcomed the delegation and expressed her appreciation for such initiatives that not only educate the youth but also inspire them to become responsible stewards of the environment—an essential value they should carry with them both during their time at the facility and beyond.
The session was designed to be interactive, encouraging dialogue and participation from the young citizens. Manager of Curieuse and Ile Coco Marine National Parks, Mr. Anto Suzette shared insights into the various conservation activities spearheaded by the SPGA to protect the unique ecosystems of Curieuse, as well as the critical role of enforcement carried out by Park Rangers. Among the highlighted initiatives were the ongoing sea turtle monitoring program, coral reef restoration, and mangrove conservation efforts. For her part, Ms. Aishah Fanchette captivated the youngsters with her personal experience as a Scientific Diver, elaborating on the intricate processes involved in coral reef restoration and emphasizing the importance of these ecosystems. The discussion also included practical ways in which the youth could contribute to conservation efforts, even from their current circumstances.

The event concluded with a Q&A session, where the offenders had the opportunity to pose thoughtful questions about conservation and the protected areas. This initiative between the Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority and the Seychelles Prison Services highlights the importance of rehabilitation through education. Future collaborations are anticipated between the two organizations, promising further benefits for the offenders.
