52 Years of Ste. Anne Marine National Park: A Legacy of Marine Conservation

Decreed on 19th March 1973, Ste. Anne Marine Park stands as a beacon of marine biodiversity and a testament to the nation’s commitment in preserving Seychelles' natural environment. Commemorating the historic milestone, the SPGA reflects on a journey filled with remarkable achievements in conservation.
Over the past five decades, Ste. Anne Marine Park has solidified its status as a thriving marine conservation area, under the oversight of the Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority(SPGA). The Park was one of the first marine protected areas established in the Indian Ocean and the first in Seychelles, setting a precedent for marine conservation efforts locally and regionally. Significant strides have been made to restore and enhance coral reef ecosystems, which are crucial for marine life and coastal protection. Such projects not only enhance biodiversity but also improves resilience against climate change. Regular assessments have been implemented over the years to monitor the health of the Park, leading to informed decision-making and adaptive management strategies.
SPGA notes that effective enforcement strategies have been paramount in maintaining the integrity of Ste. Anne Marine Park. The SPGA rangers work to ensure compliance with Park regulations and to prevent illegal activities within the Park. SPGA has adopted advanced surveillance technologies such as drones and increased patrols with the objective to enhance compliance and security. SPGA also attributes the success of Ste. Anne Marine Park with the involvement of relevant stakeholders and the surrounding community. Collaborating with partners, has fostered a sense of stewardship and responsibility, empowering residents to also act as guardians of their natural resources.

From its establishment, the Park has created economic opportunities, allowing businesses to engage in tourism related activities, thereby enhancing their livelihoods. The economic impact of Ste. Anne Marine Park extends far beyond its boundaries, contributing significantly to the development of Seychelles. The Park attracts thousands of visitors each year, providing a vital source of income for local businesses and contributing towards the national economy. It is a major draw for tourists seeking to explore its rich marine life, resulting in substantial revenue generation through entrance fees, tours and other recreational activities.
“Looking ahead, we reaffirm our commitment to the continued protection and enhancement of Ste. Anne Marine Park. In 2024, we welcomed over 28,000 paying tourists to the Park, reinforcing that such experiences are what visitors are longing for when in Seychelles”. states SPGA CEO, Allen Cedras. “The journey ahead will require ongoing collaboration, innovative solutions, and a shared vision for a sustainable future. Ste. Anne Marine Park is not just a sanctuary for marine life; it is a cornerstone of our economy and a vital resource for our communities. By protecting it, we are investing in the future of Seychelles, ensuring that both our environment and economy thrive hand in hand”.
